Tourloti is located on the national road of Sitias – Ag. Nikolaou, it is 28 kilometers from Sitia and 45 from Agios Nikolaos. It is built at an altitude of 325 meters for reasons of protection against piracy. The population of the village amounts to 430 inhabitants.

In a commanding position, with a panoramic view of Merabelo, the island of Psira and Mohlos, is the Church (Panagia), which was inaugurated in 1908 and was built for 11 years.

The inhabitants of Tourloti are mainly engaged in agricultural work. Basic products are olive oil, grapes and “despola” loquats. They are also found in various other traditional professions, which nowadays tend to disappear.

The etymology of the name Tourloti is unknown. Others believe that the village of Trouloti was named after the domes of the village church and eventually it remained Tourloti. Another theory wants the name from a Venetian tower (tour) of a Loti king.

The area of Tourloti has been inhabited since the Minoan era.

To the south of the village, on a 450 m high hill known as Kastri, the ruins of a Minoan settlement are preserved. In a chamber-shaped carved tomb of the Late Minoan era (1550–1500 BC) that was discovered near the village, valuable gifts were found such as: beads from necklaces, bracelets, rings, a manual, a razor, faience animal effigies.

Among the various mobile finds of the Minoan settlement are a seal stone depicting a pig nursing her young, a lamp depicting a horse being led to water by its master, and others. In 1959, another Late Minoan tomb (1400–1300 BC) was excavated.

On the Venetian maps it is recorded under the name Truloti, while in the Venetian census in 1583 it is listed with 313 inhabitants.
The village was built on a hill due to widespread piracy.
